Hello, everyone. Welcome to Imagine Yourself. I am Lanee here with Sandy, and today we want to talk all about imagination. I remember when my kids were little, we watched an episode of spongebob, and all he talked about in that episode was imagination. Sandy and I have our arm up in the air. That was a classic episode. But it does kind of bring us to the point where I don't know if anyone listening out there. When you were a little kid, did you have that kind of imagination where you believed you could be an astronaut, you could believe that you could be a teacher, Wonder Woman, or the world was at your beck and call as far as what you could do, what you could be, how you could accomplish things.

Lanée Blaise [00:00:50]:
And I really hope that we have not gotten away from that, because imagination really is a gift from God that we are meant to use to help us to expand and grow in a unique way.

Sandy Kovach  [00:01:03]:
They say that every invention, every work of art, every dream for a better tomorrow began first in someone's imagination. God gave us this gift. As you mentioned, it's not just for daydreaming or even, you know, playing Barbie dolls when we're little, but for creating, growing, and stepping into the life that God calls us to. So, yeah, I mean, let's not use that or lose that imagination that we had as kids. Just use it, redirect it, right?

Lanée Blaise [00:01:38]:
Just redirect it a little bit or put some guardrails maybe on it. I mean, some people maybe need to take the guardrails off and really open up their ability to imagine their lives. Like. Like I said when we started this podcast seven years ago, Sandy, Imagine Yourself was the title that we landed on because we wanted people to walk away imagining a different life for themselves or imagining whatever they felt to be a better life for themselves, or imagining themselves staying in this great life they have, you know, but imagining themselves, it starts.

Sandy Kovach  [00:02:15]:
In the imagination and thinking back. And you really had me going there with them thinking about being a kid, because kids, whether they're drawing a picture or so much now is on screens. But back in our day, you know, we would play school or we would play Barbies or we would play Matchbox cars. I had two brothers, so, oh, yeah, I had a ton of Matchbox cars. And I know kids still play with toys and they still have imaginations, but it doesn't seem like with everything, you know, maybe they don't. And maybe even the technology is contributing to our lack of imagination in the world.

Lanée Blaise [00:02:53]:
That is something to really be aware of when we are spending time, even as adults you know, we've talked a lot lately about journaling. We've talked about sitting still and being quiet with God. We've talked about all kinds of things in different episodes in our relationships, in our workplace. But when you do imagination, or sometimes people like to think about it more as visualization. And it can have some really practical uses in our daily life. As far as when you sit still, before you're going to give a presentation at work, before you're going to go on a run, before you are about to have a talk with your spouse or your children or your loved ones, sit for a minute and imagine. Visualize the way that you want the conversation to go, the way you want the presentation to go, the way you can see yourself thriving in your run or your walk. It's setting yourself up for success.

Lanée Blaise [00:03:56]:
Plain simple, in my opinion. And I really think that it can be used as a growth tool for healing. Like imagine yourself healthier. We were talking about this just the very last episode as far as my mother trying to convince me to really see and focus on our family member who had been having health problems and who, I guess, spoiler alert, she's really thriving now. She's doing really great. She really is smiling and eating well and moving around more and doing better than she was even from when we just did the last episode. So I will continue to just see her thriving and winning and moving and being healthy and blessed and saying that to God and praying it to God along with her going to the doctor and along. You know, there's other things too, but, you know, but seeing it helps.

Sandy Kovach  [00:04:51]:
I'm sure that the way that we visualize, let's say it's another person that's sick or going through something, or we want to visualize different, if we keep thinking of them in those, in the negative parts, then we're going to treat them differently. It matters how we think of ourself and it matters how we think about other people. And believing the best about other people is often so important because when we start to picture negative things, not just being sick, but sometimes we tell ourself negative stories, whether it's about other people or about ourselves. And that definitely affects our interactions.

Lanée Blaise [00:05:27]:
You're right. Because so many times we do, we talk about negative self talk, but also we gotta consider trying to do a turnaround on negative self thought.

Sandy Kovach  [00:05:40]:
So, yeah, so much power and imagination of how we perceive ourselves, people, situations, like you were saying about visualization. So many people, whether they're athletes imagining themselves catching a touchdown or they're Somebody imagining themselves going out and killing it on a speech. People use that all the time, and it's actually recommended. And you are a motivational speaker, as that's one of your. What do we call it? Side hustles or one of your things or one of your specialties?

Lanée Blaise [00:06:08]:
Yes, indeed. Yes, ma'. Am.

Sandy Kovach  [00:06:11]:
So do you. What do you do when you go out there?

Lanée Blaise [00:06:13]:
To be fair, I always kind of get a little caught up in the preparation from a very structured logistical point of view. But it is often very helpful when I do take time to. I don't know if I've been using the power of visualization to its fullest as far as actually seeing all the components, but it is something to be said where I do actually sit and think ahead of time of the people who will be moved by it. I pray for those people who will be hopefully touched by the things that are being said. I see where God is moving in different people that I may or may not ever get to experience later. I see people in my brain smiling and laughing at the parts where there's, you know, supposed to be laughing, being hit right in the heart in a good way with the parts that are supposed to be really impactful that way. To be fair, I also. I don't know if this is as much imagination.

Lanée Blaise [00:07:16]:
This is still kind of the logistical part, but I literally do this with most things. Think about myself, driving and getting there on time, getting a good parking space, getting all my materials into the building, everything going smoothly, people filling the seats. It is something where it is. It feels like it is creating. It is as if you were the event coordinator. And by seeing it happen in your mind, you have it come to fruition in real life. And then those people really are filling the seats and they really are smiling and you really are connecting and God really is working through you. There is just a power in that.

Lanée Blaise [00:07:58]:
There is a power in seeing it in your mind and in your heart and in your spirit before you go out and do it. I'm not an athlete, but I would imagine if you could even imagine yourself, your muscles and your energy sources and stores all kicking in in beautiful ways as you run to go, catch that touchdown, throw that ball, hit that bat. It's all a coordinated effort. Mind, body, spirit, the muscles, the bones, everything working beautifully. I think we jump to do before we even consider jumping to think first, to think and imagine and visualize.

Sandy Kovach  [00:08:42]:
So, yeah, imagine and visualizing. And some people have, like, hype people to help them build them up.

Lanée Blaise [00:08:49]:
Got your hype, man. Like coming to the stage, we have Sandy Kovac. She's about to knock your socks off. Let's give it up for Sandy. That's right, your own little hype man in your head. You don't even have to have another person.

Sandy Kovach  [00:09:03]:
I know. I've heard of musicians and singers who have hype men. You know, all kinds of people. You telling them how great they are. Most of us aren't trailed around by a hype man, but we could have just like David in the Bible, encourage yourself in the Lord, you can have that internal hype man.

Lanée Blaise [00:09:20]:
Especially think about, like someone like me who can barely run a mile. What if I for some reason decided my daughter has signed up for a half marathon, which I'm like, oh, my goodness, she's going to really need an internal hype man, hype woman in her brain to get through that 13 miles.

Sandy Kovach  [00:09:38]:
Absolutely. So whether it's encouraging yourself, visualizing all of the things that are gifts, I mean, God gave us this kind of brain that's able to imagine anything. My friend in high school, we used to have this saying, because common saying is, oh, I could never imagine that. And we'd always come back with, yes, you can. You can imagine anything. And literally you can imagine anything. You don't want to imagine anything necessarily, but you can, right?

Lanée Blaise [00:10:08]:
It's like, so Albert Einstein said something. He said, logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere. And that is just like a fun quote. Also, I'm surprised that you and your little friends back, you said it back in high school were so wise to know that, yes, you can imagine that.

Sandy Kovach  [00:10:28]:
Well, we were probably imagining things in our own little world back then. I don't know, it was a different time. And I feel like we've lost that. There are some things that you were talking about guardrails. And certainly, you know, we don't want to daydream the day away and necessarily imagine anything. But I think it more a problem for us adults is like, we don't go there. Why can't we sit down and imagine? Because God did give us that gift to use it in different ways. And like we said in that first statement in the beginning of the podcast, it is the beginning of creation.

Sandy Kovach  [00:11:04]:
Like, even they said, imagine a better world. And don't we all wish we could imagine a better world and we just poo poo like that? Yeah, that's not gonna happen. And we think about all the horrible things, so why not imagine that? What would that be like in our minds? Or what would it be like to have the perfect marriage? Or what would it be like to have the perfect job? Or what would it be like if you were kind on a day, daily basis and patient and can make a difference in all kinds of people's lives? You see where I'm going with this?

Lanée Blaise [00:11:35]:
I actually love it. Do you have any more. Those are great. Like, I mean, it's really. You're actually walking it out, talking it out for us. Imagine, like you said, you know, as far as the health. Imagine yourself getting good rest at night, waking up feeling refreshed, feeling healthy, taking some time outside in nature and really enjoying it. Imagine your children coming home, like, happy to see you from school or, you know, or from wherever they're coming from, and smiling and laughing.

Lanée Blaise [00:12:06]:
Imagine laughter filling your home. Imagine people treating one another with more and more kindness and really getting behind that as a model, as a way to live and spend less time focused on the negative, even biblically, really focusing on, from, like, from Philippians, what is true, what is noble, what is right, what is lovely, what is admirable and praiseworthy and excellent. Think on those things. Imagine those things happening. Even when we, like, you know, I'm not going to be crazy. Even though we definitely don't always see evidence of that, but that's also in the Bible as far as Hebrews 11. Now, faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. We're driving right into the faith element of imagination as well, because faith requires imagination.

Sandy Kovach  [00:13:08]:
We walk by faith and not by sight. That is. That is so true. I mean, in God is spirit, yet we feel him and we have faith in him. And we weren't alive back when Jesus was alive and we didn't see what the disciples saw. Yet when we read the Gospels, it resonates with us and it's more than just words on a page. So, yeah, I think it definitely drives into the faith element. I'm sure you've heard of Corrie Ten Boom.

Sandy Kovach  [00:13:38]:
She had a great quote. Faith sees the invisible, believes the unbelievable and receives the impossible. So where else can those things live except for in our imagination?

Lanée Blaise [00:13:52]:
Wow, that's beautiful. And I'm not familiar with that.

Sandy Kovach  [00:13:56]:
Corrie Ten Boom was actually in a concentration camp. I mean, we're talking about back in World War II, like the real deal, the Holocaust. Talk about a person of faith, how you could struggle through and the worst of circumstances. You can imagine someone in that situation really needing to use her imagination almost.

Lanée Blaise [00:14:19]:
As a coping mechanism through getting to be able to get through the suffering there. And that's that part too. Like, we always try our best to be realistic on imagine yourself as well. You know, as far as we understand, there is pain, there's suffering, there are trials and tribulations going on in this world, in our lives, in other people's lives. But we still want to hold for hope. We still have faith in God. We still want to be able to. Yes.

Lanée Blaise [00:14:51]:
Find certain coping mechanisms that will give us a better chance of succeeding and getting through the darkness. It's just true. There is one more thing that I want to mention too. Since I'm being like realistic, I don't want anyone to be confused. If you don't practice visualization, if you don't have a positive attitude, if you don't think up the good things, that doesn't mean that God won't turn around and bless you anyway with something that you didn't even think up, you didn't even know to ask that you didn't even visualize or imagine. Because you know, there's. You were talking about this earlier, Sandy, about the scripture in Ephesians 3:20, which is really. Oh, it's a really juicy, big beautiful one in my opinion.

Lanée Blaise [00:15:43]:
But Ephesians 3:20 says now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine according to his power that is at work within us. And it's talking about God. God is that one who can do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine. And, and so often God does. And we just need to remember that too. Because there are times when I have been in the pit, in the abyss, where I was not going to imagine anything good. I was going to have complete negative thinking. I was going to just think that everything sucked and was all hope is gone, you know, and a combination of God's love for me and blessing me or giving a positive outcome anyway happen sometimes.

Lanée Blaise [00:16:34]:
And then other times my mother would actually hold the faith for me. She would do the praying and the holding out for hope and faith on my behalf. And I have tried to do that same thing for others as well when I see that they just don't have it. Praying for them, intercessory prayer to the Holy Spirit, those types of things, imagining better for them than they would imagine for themselves.

Sandy Kovach  [00:17:00]:
Like you're doing with your family member.

Lanée Blaise [00:17:02]:
Yes, because she was stuck right then in the bad abyss, the mess, the gunk.

Sandy Kovach  [00:17:09]:
Yeah.

Lanée Blaise [00:17:09]:
And sometimes that is what will happen to a human, even a God loving human, even a faith Filled human. There are vulnerable times where we are either not ourselves or everything is too much. Because a lot of people think that the Bible says God will never give you more than you can bear. And that's not in the Bible. It's God won't give you more temptation than you can bear. God will always give you an escape way out.

Sandy Kovach  [00:17:39]:
Yeah.

Lanée Blaise [00:17:39]:
That is in Corinthians. That's Corinthians 10:13. So life will give you more than you can bear, and God will be there with you in order to never forsake you and never leave you. As we often have to go through the thing.

Sandy Kovach  [00:17:57]:
That's so true. Yeah.

Lanée Blaise [00:17:59]:
So now we kind of move to some practical applications of the use of imagination.

Sandy Kovach  [00:18:06]:
I love this one prayer with imagination. Picture yourself in the presence of Jesus when you pray. And I believe you said on one podcast that you kind of do picture that, or you picture yourself in the arms of God.

Lanée Blaise [00:18:21]:
That. In the arms of God. And another one that I started to do, it was a guest that we had, Carrie Lappy. She's a wellness coach. She also asked me to picture myself, especially when I'm at home alone during the day for lunchtime, sitting at the table with Jesus and kind of doing like, Revelations 3:20, where you invite, you know, here I stand at the door and knock and that if you open the door, I will come and eat with you. And I actually imagine that I am opening the door to my heart and my mind and my life to Jesus to come sit at the table and eat lunch with me. And. And while I'm eating that food, you know, she's a wellness and nutrition coach, so she has me thinking about these foods that I'm eating being digested well, nourishing my body, helping my nutrition goals, and the spiritual component of sitting and eating with Jesus, which some people back in the New Testament actually did get to do.

Lanée Blaise [00:19:22]:
They Jesus cooked breakfast and had fish and bread that he on a stone that he cooked as they came from fishing. And it's just a beautiful thing to set your mind on, imagine, to focus on.

Sandy Kovach  [00:19:38]:
Have you watched the Chosen the series on Prime?

Lanée Blaise [00:19:42]:
Yes, I have watched some of the episodes. Many of my family and friends are like, you gotta watch the rest. Like, why? Like, what are you doing? I'm like, I don't know. I've gotta watch the rest. But yes. Have you been watching as well?

Sandy Kovach  [00:19:53]:
I just started recently and I don't know why I just started, like, for the longest time, I heard about it. Same thing. People like, you gotta watch it. So finally, it's just it really. We don't know what Jesus looked like, and we don't know what any of the folks looked like back then, but, you know, they do realistic characteristics of Middle Eastern people. But it just puts it in your imagination. You're more able to kind of imagine, well, what was it like when Peter got out and walked on the water? Well, what was it like when they went out and caught all those fish? And what was it like? You know, so I like the chosen and I like being able to think about that because Jesus was fully man, you know, so full person with personality.

Lanée Blaise [00:20:35]:
The actor who plays him really took it seriously as far as he understood that he is, as an actor, representing a figure that is so important to us all and how he really, you know, he prays about it first. He wants to make sure that he is, like you said, putting that in our imaginations because it's a creative endeavor. And there are some. There's some creative license in there. But the part where he's with the little children and he's smiling and laughing, that is something that is not necessarily mentioned very much in the Bible, the smiling and laughing component of Jesus, but it's a very human part and I think a very important part. And especially when he's talking about, let all the little children come. Those are future people of the kingdom and of heaven. So, yeah, I think that's a really beautiful one.

Lanée Blaise [00:21:34]:
Another one is back to journaling, keeping like one of those imagination journals. I know we have gratitude journals, but what if you had an imagination journal where you kind of write some things that. That you desire and you want to see? And they might be big things because sometimes we get afraid. We have a fear of thinking and dreaming big. But in this journal, I mean, the sky's the limit. And especially if some of these things are the desires of your heart or that God is putting within you and stirring within you, go ahead and let yourself dream and imagine big.

Sandy Kovach  [00:22:11]:
Absolutely. Because you can imagine anything.

Lanée Blaise [00:22:14]:
Exactly.

Sandy Kovach  [00:22:15]:
Romans 12:2 says, Use imagination to reshape old thought patterns. It doesn't say that, but it's. I'm paraphrasing here, using imagination as renewal, renewing our minds. So that kind of goes back to some of the things we talked about earlier as far as imagining ourselves healing. But old patterns, like, what if we have a tendency to feel anxious at certain times? Can we imagine ourselves completely at peace when we have to give a presentation at work or do anything? There are various states of anxiety that people are in and they're real. Just because people think, oh, well, you shouldn't be anxious about that doesn't mean that people aren't. They can get the fight or flight thing going because of trauma in the past or just anything that happened. So, yeah, I mean, I'm not saying it's going to cure your anxiety fully, but imagining yourself doing things anxiety free.

Lanée Blaise [00:23:10]:
My mom does that lately for her blood pressure. She does not want to take the blood pressure pills and her doctor does not like her blood pressure to be too high. So she has begun a process of very slowly and calmly letting the anxieties go down, letting the peace swoop in. Taking the nice deep breaths before she takes her blood pressure. It has worked. It really has calmed down. And she, you know, she has to do that a few times a week. And then she can also do it just in daily life to kind of bring all that stress level back down.

Lanée Blaise [00:23:48]:
So I do like that one also, since we're talking about peace too, I'll just add on to it. Imagine yourself living on this side of heaven with that prayer being answered, whether it's the peace that you want or the health that you want, or the relationship that you want, you know, and always with the preface of with God's will being done. But imagine that already happening, already being the case in your life. And that's another one. Kind of like the journal, like, let it be. The sky's the limit. Let yourself not be afraid to see it or think it or feel it, and maybe not be too attached to the circumstance or the outcome, but to at least let it float out there as a thought, as a desire.

Sandy Kovach  [00:24:38]:
Cause, yeah, just like when we were kids, we didn't think, yeah, I can't imagine being Wonder Woman because how could that even really happen? Yeah, you just think you are. Yeah. Or in your case, you're married to Ralph Macchio.

Lanée Blaise [00:24:53]:
Or married to Ralph Macchio and Wonder Woman. And like, you know, being a singer, which I can't even sing, and being a dancer because I saw the TV show Fame and I wanted to be a dancer. It's just like I was going to do all these things. And in a way, I don't regret it because I did get to take dance class. I did not take any singing lessons, but I did get to take dance class. I did get to do some acting classes. I did get to try some of the things that at least I dreamed about as a kid. I did get to get married to.

Lanée Blaise [00:25:25]:
Not the Karate Kid, but a great man.

Sandy Kovach  [00:25:29]:
The man of your dreams.

Lanée Blaise [00:25:30]:
Exactly. I did so it says in the Bible too, you know, sometimes as far as the way you come to God. Come to God as a little child would, without all the cynicism and skepticism and fear and frustration and. Well, how would that happen? Or what if. Come with a little innocence, if you can.

Sandy Kovach  [00:25:50]:
Yeah, absolutely. And again, we're not advocating going off and living in a daydream world. I think we made that clear. But just to kind of say that one more time, we're just saying mix in the reality. Yes, but keep your feet on the ground, or what is it Casey Kasem used to say? Keep your feet on the ground. Keep reaching for the stars?

Lanée Blaise [00:26:09]:
I think so, yeah. Gosh, you brought. We are really doing some back in.

Sandy Kovach  [00:26:13]:
The days to come. I know, I know. He's the American top 40 countdown. Yeah, I know. Some people remember that. Yeah.

Lanée Blaise [00:26:21]:
There's one more if anyone wants to join me in this and Sandy. But this week, let's consider taking one area of our life where we feel stuck and ask God to help us to imagine, you know, with God's help, what would a breakthrough in that area look like? What would that vision look like overall? And, you know, this one is one that's probably more specific to. Like I said, an area that we feel stuck in. An area that we maybe didn't even dare to hope for better. But after this episode, why not? Why not go ahead and hope for better? You know, just. Just try to hold God's hand or visualize yourself holding God's hand and walking through it. I know last night I was. I woke up at like three in the morning and I was frustrated about some things and I was praying to God and I visualized myself and I actually held my arm up in the air, in the bed too.

Lanée Blaise [00:27:23]:
And I asked God, I said, I know that you're the God who can uphold us with your righteous right hand. Please take my arm, symbolically, lift me up out of this frustrated state and dropped me over into a state of nice, peaceful, restful sleep. And almost like a little like a dad. If a kid is about to jump into a puddle, the dad might just pull him right up and put them over on the other side. And just visualize that parent, that good father component, lifting me up out of the stress and dropping me off into the state of peace and rest. There's so many ways we can go with this. That's what I'm saying with this journal. There's so many ways we can go with it.

Lanée Blaise [00:28:03]:
So.

Sandy Kovach  [00:28:03]:
Yeah, that's beautiful. So let me ask you this, as we imagine this, is this going to be something that can be a practical application? Like, okay, let's say, okay, so I'm going to start meeting with a nutritionist. That's going to help me with my health. I can imagine myself being very successful. That's a practical imagination, right?

Lanée Blaise [00:28:27]:
Yes.

Sandy Kovach  [00:28:28]:
Another kind of imagination would be, let's say there's a situation with someone else and you have no, you have zero control over it, is it okay to imagine that situation being resolved?

Lanée Blaise [00:28:42]:
Yeah, that's one where I have another family member who has a teenage child, kind of like in crisis situation. Everything was going downhill as far as their behavior, obedience levels, their cooperation, everything bad. And this kid has a great heart and imagining him being different, acting differently, having God touch his heart, soften his heart, change him, transform him. And with a lot of therapy sessions with psychiatrists and psychologists, help from the school, help from parents, help from friends, help from family, help from pastors, and some great specific advice. Again, like you said, like, we wouldn't even know. We wouldn't have any control or knowledge on how to do it. But when you get the good advice and then you start following it, this, this particular teenager is now thriving. This has all done a turnaround within a period of one year.

Lanée Blaise [00:29:58]:
And I know that it doesn't always happen like this, but many of our teenagers are struggling. Some with anxiety, some with just the wrong crowd, some with acting out. But this particular teenager is now thriving, writing letters of gratitude to the parents that and to different people. It's like, what a turnaround, what a transformation. And I believe in this case it was because the community around him always knew and believed he had a good heart and always knew and believed that God could do things beyond our understanding and beyond our capabilities. I'm just so grateful to report another success in our family.

Sandy Kovach  [00:30:45]:
It's just, wow, that is amazing. Praise God. That's beautiful. And so the community was supportive and they believed the best about him. They knew they had faith that God could turn things around, and they had faith in him. As, you know, there's a great person in there, there's a great heart in there. They didn't look at him as a lost cause. And so that goes back a little bit to what we were talking about before, is how we are imagining other people turning around or like your sick relative, you know, imagine that person feeling better.

Sandy Kovach  [00:31:19]:
And yeah, boy, we can really use imagination for a lot. And it does tie right in with our faith walk.

Yeah. And of course, like in this case, like, I said you pair it alongside with therapy. You pair it alongside with good quality advice and solid, actionable items that needed to be taken and things had to be done. That involved time and money and effort and logistics, but keeping that focus, again, on what was pure and lovely and excellent, you know, on that heart of his. And again, like that part where, you know, he was raised. He was raised in the church, so he had been baptized. He had that seed planted in his spirit. There are times when our young people might go off of that path, but they will return to it.

They will. In their heart, God is still. And the Holy Spirit is still in there.
