Lanee Blaise [00:00:04]:
Well, hello everybody. I hope you have your boots on today because we have some hard questions and some real answers for you. I'm Lanee here with Sandy, and we're just gonna jump right into it based on the episode that we just released a couple weeks ago when we really finally understand that God's timing is perfect. Sandy and I wanted to build upon it, And we wanted to jump into the depths of how do we balance faith with action, especially when God does not always give us a very specific roadmap, exactly when we want it. I really started thinking about even in the Bible, there are many times where questions are asked before the revelation comes before the real big moment comes.
Sandy Kovach [00:01:03]:
Yeah.
Lanee Blaise [00:01:04]:
And so I just thought we could do that in our lives too, because many times we're in this limbo of what part of the thing that's coming up in life do I fully surrender to God, that just be still mode. And what part of it involves me taking action and preparation and doing the thing. And it just had me thinking about things in the past. I know you and I are gonna talk about some ways and some things that we've dealt with, but like, I really want people as we're going through this today to think if these things are running through your head or not, like, when do I move? Where do I go? What should I do? Who do I ask for help? How do I get from this point a to point b? And even why am I wanting this or doing this this thing, this job, this new season, this new me, you know, new you type of thing. I just really wanted to get into the fact that I don't want any of us to be asleep. I want us to be fully awake. I want us to really challenge ourselves today, and I'm gonna pass it over to Sandy and see what you think about this all this kind of question based stuff when it comes to faith versus action.
Sandy Kovach [00:02:29]:
Well, faith versus works as they put it in the bible. I think in James, it says faith without works is dead. And it's kind of talking about a different thing where just because you do something, you don't earn your way to heaven. It's faith and by the grace of God. But I think we can put that into action or into our thought process with this faith versus action. We don't wanna be full out just motivated by, I gotta hustle and do the next thing and the next thing and the next thing without waiting on god. But at the same time, we don't wanna be sitting like a bump on a log too, and those are two extreme examples. And you mentioned not having a road map.
Sandy Kovach [00:03:05]:
And you also mentioned something that I think is very interesting. We have to ask why. I think we really have to be honest with ourselves and look at our motivations. And nobody else has to know it's between you and God. Why do I really wanna do that? Is that kinda where you were going with the why?
Lanee Blaise [00:03:23]:
It is because I tell you what, Sandy. This world is loud. This world will have you thinking that you do have to hustle hard. This world will have you under its authority instead of under God's authority or instead of being under your own soul and spirit and heart authority. Why do you want to be famous? Why do you want to have 10,000 or 1,000,000 followers? You know, what is that? Why is it really just playing to your ego and your pride and your shiny new things that we're supposed to be attracted to or, you know, attractive? Or is it that we have been nudged by God? Is it that we are really walking in our purpose? Do we even really have a good grasp on what our purpose is? You know?
Sandy Kovach [00:04:17]:
Yeah. And not even just, you know, I know you were just using followers as an as an example, but someone could be sitting back going, I I could care less about all that stuff. I just want this dream to come true, or I'm so overwhelmed by what's going on in my life right now. I can't see my way through to just pick myself up and move a step forward. I think that applies to everything. And I think you make a good point with the followers, though, because we're so pushed by social media, not just by getting more followers or even being famous, but by competition. Oh my goodness. There's Lanae again.
Sandy Kovach [00:04:52]:
She and her husband are out having dinner at the Whitney, and they look so beautiful in their new outfits. And I wish my husband would take me out on a Saturday night instead of sitting around binging on old Office reruns. You know, things like that.
Lanee Blaise [00:05:07]:
Yeah. You know, my cousin just wrote me the other day, and she said that she really is starting to wish that we'd be back in the days before social media was even a thing. And what she was getting at kind of to your point about a level of competition or self doubt or overthinking it when it comes to other people, but even when it comes to ourselves because my cousin would kind of giving the aspect of the things that she shares on social media and where she is and what she's doing. And then when things aren't so great and you've gotten used to sharing and, you know, all the positive and happy and joyful things, it starts making you go to a place where I really don't think we would go to if we didn't have that spotlight on it. Yeah. And it just, you know, it speaks again to who are we serving? Who are we here for? Who has authority over our life and our business? And when I say our business, I mean, like our personal business, our financial business, career business. What are we
Sandy Kovach [00:06:19]:
doing? I agree. I mean, it's is this Instagrammable, you know, for a social media shot? And and, like, to be fair, I have put some of my career and in the past, I've run digital platforms for businesses where I kinda have to think like that, and I kinda do enjoy social media. And I started thinking about this really recently. We and I've read about the adrenaline rush we get when people like our posts or views on our reels or it's almost like you get an adrenaline rush maybe when you go out shopping and buy a new pair of shoes. It's something new. It's something that's hitting you. And I think we get a little addicted to that. So it feeds into itself.
Sandy Kovach [00:07:03]:
And by the same token, the example I gave seeing you not that this ever happened, but, because you're not you're not all about that.
Lanee Blaise [00:07:10]:
I hardly ever do anything personal on social media.
Sandy Kovach [00:07:13]:
Yeah. Which is you know what? That's awesome. I'm thinking about that too, just putting positive quotes and reels and stuff like that. But, I get it for people who have to be out there marketing or do want those 10,000 followers that's part of their job or their business. But at the same time, it really can get to you. So was your cousin's conclusion to jump off of social media, or was she just talking back to herself?
Lanee Blaise [00:07:37]:
No. Guess what she did? If we really think about it, let's say, for example, Instagram and maybe even Facebook. In the beginning, they were originally meant for sharing amongst a small group of folks. It wasn't necessarily to be sharing with the world or to brand yourself per se. And so what my cousin ended up doing was kinda going back to that, which means that when the frustrating things came up, she went ahead and just laid it out right there. And I know a lot of people have been doing that, more often, not just showing the highs, but also sharing some of the more frustrating points in life. And when she did that, the reception that she got was really beautiful and genuine, and it was from people who actually know her and love her, which again is what the whole purpose was supposed to be about. I know that we all have this desire for approval and for belonging.
Lanee Blaise [00:08:46]:
I I feel like this whole episode is kind of about balance. Again, that balance between faith and action. And in this case, that balance between understanding that, yes, you do want to have a sense of belonging amongst your friends and family members and peers. But the biggest club, the biggest the biggest club to be a part of is to be you with God and your own soul. The reason I kinda put our own soul is because I just feel like I've mentioned this the last episode. Lanae's soul is different than Lanae's little personality and quirks and moods and stuff. But our soul and our whole self with God is where we really want to make sure we're basing that sense of belonging and approval.
Sandy Kovach [00:09:36]:
Yeah. Absolutely. The audience of one. And so to kinda circle back I know we went on a little social media tangent, but I think that's helpful because people, you know, deal with social media or a lot of people do. Most people maybe even every day. But to kinda go back to between god and us and the difference between hustling and the difference between waiting on God, and when do we do that, and what happens especially when we don't have a road map. I remember when I was coming out of those years Well, it's probably more like a year, year and a half where I was having surgeries and doing things, and I just I had to lay back. But when I got out and started to come back, I had to force myself, even though I didn't feel like it, I had to force myself to reach out to people that I hadn't reached out to, circle back with contacts, and I didn't feel like it.
Sandy Kovach [00:10:30]:
But I knew I knew I had to do it. God does create us to work, and he does create us to be productive. And I felt like I had a gift to share, whether it's radio or podcasting. And so I had to do it, and it paid, obviously. And I know you've been through the same thing. You felt like you had a gift to share, and you did a lot of networking during the pandemic. And it's paid off big time for you as far as your television and, you know, producing and screenwriting.
Lanee Blaise [00:10:58]:
It has. And that's the wonderful thing about really being still and listening to the seasons and the tides, the ebbs and the flows of when you're supposed to rest and when you're supposed to go ahead and move towards the the shore and and really start doing some making the magic happen. Because I wonder sometimes when we have those health problems, I do believe that you were meant to have God work it together for some good where you were meant to take that time away from everyone, away from everything, and to be with God. I'm not saying I wanted you to have those problems, those health problems, you know, at all, but since they were there, when they were there, I do believe it gave you some quiet time to step back and mine is always keeps being with my dang on feet. Every time I'm just going, going, going, going, won't stop, won't stop, then God lets something happen with my inherited bad feet. But, where I actually have to literally and physically stop moving forward so much. And it's actually kind of symbolic too. That's the feet and toes and all that good stuff.
Lanee Blaise [00:12:16]:
But Yeah. That is, you know, that's happening again to me now. And I am really trying to listen even in, like, physical therapy because now I have to go to physical therapy and I have this ultrasonic shock therapy thing. It's just a whole lot going on, but all this to say, I get to, even during those times, sit quietly while they're shocking my feet, and I'm just praying and being still and quiet and really trying to make sure that I'm getting the message. Because, again, there's been the season of hustle, hustle, hustle, and if I'm not careful and that becomes my only way to be, then I'll miss out on all of God's goodness. And then I know there's those people who are saying, like, okay. They aren't necessarily doing hustle, hustle, hustle, and they aren't necessarily just sitting perfectly still, but they are waiting and wondering what does God want me to do? Like, how am I supposed to go to the next step? And I really wanna, like, talk to those folks for just a minute too. Mhmm.
Lanee Blaise [00:13:16]:
Because there is something to be said about scraps. When I say scraps, like, you know, when you have leftovers or you give your little puppy scraps or something like that, but when you feel like you don't have anything big to give, you're not all the way there, you haven't perfected the thing, but you do have some little scraps or some pieces that you can offer up. I want to challenge folks, including myself, to go with the belief that I'm gonna start with something. I know that I have this desire in my heart. I know that I have faith that God, you know, will help with those desires that he planted in my heart. And I am going to offer up those little scraps up to God with humility, knowing that I don't have the full picture because a lot of times, and you really had me thinking this when you said that I've been doing things with producing for TV and film. I never wanted to be. I never planned to be producing anything.
Lanee Blaise [00:14:30]:
I only wanted to be writing. But when I offered up and surrendered the writing and the piece of myself, then God used it and built with it and then began to make something more than I had even thought or imagined myself to be doing. There's a beauty in that because it's God giving to us more, you know, exceeding, you know, just like, Ephesians three twenty, that God is giving abundantly, exceedingly more than we asked for or imagined. And I really think that again, this culture, this society will have us thinking that if we don't have the whole thing together, why even bother? And if things aren't gonna look exactly like we wanted them to look on the other side, why even bother? I would prefer if all of us take the time to sit and imagine ourselves saying like, what if this turns out totally different? How open am I to God turning this thing sideways or upside down or around spinning it a different way than just the straight line, maybe even boring method that I had for myself. What's your take on that, Sandy?
Sandy Kovach [00:15:51]:
Well, is god will surprise you. And when I started, I started doing two things when I came out of this quote, unquote, sick period, which, you know, I think I've talked about before. If you ever listened to the podcast, one is I got into the word a lot deeper, and I would say that's grounding, you know, praying and getting into the word on a daily basis. And the second thing was, like you said, surrendering it to God. And I ended up with something I thought I would never do, which is be on a Christian radio station. I've been radio all I all these years, and just it never occurred to me. Just never seemed like the right fit for me. I've never felt like I had enough spirituality in me.
Sandy Kovach [00:16:35]:
I never felt like I had enough, knowledge. I thought that's too great of a responsibility. And in these days and times when you can be on different stations and broadcast in different parts of the country, it allowed me to do that. And God opened a door through a good friend of mine that I never saw coming. So, yeah, I think if you will give what you wanna do to God, whether you are sure you want to, in your case, write, or I am sure I want to have more voiceovers, or I am you know, whatever it is, give that to god and let him do what he will. Or there may be a place where you just don't know. You're like, god, I know there's something else in me. I know you have something for me.
Sandy Kovach [00:17:19]:
Would you please show me and direct me? So let's say I do that, miss Lanae. Let's say I'm in a place where I don't know what the heck is going on here. I just know there's something more. What would you say that I do other than pray? Of course. We're gonna pray.
Lanee Blaise [00:17:35]:
So I actually have a few little things to say because the first thing I wanna say is like my mother has been kind of going through some of this. She's retired and she feels like she has something to give to this world and she's not sure exactly what she wants to do or how she wants to do it and she doesn't want to get it wrong because that's another part, this fear of like, I don't want to do the wrong thing. And so she'll get a nudge from God. In this case, it was to start a little community group where her neighbors, her physical neighbors get to come together and go through not quite as, strong of a word as a Bible study, but get together and reflect upon God and share some stories and some wisdom and just that fellowship component and to start small. And again, she was really just worried about getting it wrong, where God was trying to ask her to trust and to just go wade into the the shallow water and just give it a test, you know, try it out. I know that part of the problem with many of us can be that we try to make it too big, too bold, where we can really simplify and scale down and have no shame in that. The other component is we have to be careful what we listen to. I know we talked about like the hustle hustle culture, but there's also even I don't know how many people have heard this and wonder, but when it's like, be a leader, not a follower.
Lanee Blaise [00:19:23]:
Sometimes I wonder if we don't need to focus on be a leader, be a leader, And maybe you do want to be careful of who you follow or what you follow. But sometimes I wonder if we pull back and just say, instead, be a thinker, thinking is so underrated. I wonder if we just sit for a minute and think again about those questions. What is really pulling us forward? What do we really want to do? Who do we want to do it with? What can we see ourselves looking like, feeling like, being like when we're out there doing the thing? With my mom, as I said, something as beautiful as gathering together her neighbors, which, you know, logistically, you need to make sure you reach out to them. You need to make sure you have some kind of agenda. She wanted to make sure that there was a little bit of refreshments, but nothing over the top. She didn't want anyone, including herself, to feel stressed, and it turned into something beautiful. As far as with me in the producing, I needed to learn more things.
Lanee Blaise [00:20:29]:
And I had Renell Golden as my partner on, on that in the production team. She taught me what I needed to learn. She allowed me to build up my confidence. And in this case, I wasn't a leader. In this case, I was a follower and that was okay. And I had to really sit and think about myself. Like sometimes I'll sit and think from start to finish, what does a day of filming really need to look like? Even as simple as I need to make sure that I have snacks packed for the day because it's gonna be a long day. I need to make sure that I'm dressed appropriately.
Lanee Blaise [00:21:04]:
I have the proper footwear because it's gonna be a lot of movement. I've gotta make sure that we're ready for whatever the weather is in case there's an indoor outdoor shoot. It's the component of just actually visualizing the whole process from start to finish. There are people who wanna become an author. Do they need to think about the writing of the book, the marketing of the book, getting it published? Can they see themselves actually, again, on social media promoting the book? Can they see themselves reaching out to bookstores where they could do book signings? Can they see all of that? Because if they don't sit long enough to visualize the whole process, then you might miss a step or you might realize this is not even something I wanna do. I don't know what what do you think when I said? Sandy, like, you know, mate, like, what do you think when people say they wanna do something, but did they really ever think about all the steps that are involved?
Sandy Kovach [00:22:06]:
Well, it reminds me of my little niece. Well, she's not as so little anymore, Eloria. And I haven't seen her in a while, and I miss her. But I remember all the times where she would say she'd see something like somebody on the Disney Channel or doing something and is I'm gonna do that. I I can already play the piano. Like, do you want Joe my son, Joe, you know, as a musician, would you like Joe to give you lessons? Oh, I already know how to play the piano because she could bang on it all. Now I know she not liked it now, but when she was five years old, of course. So sometimes we can be five year olds, and sometimes we can say, well, I can do that.
Sandy Kovach [00:22:44]:
It's very easy, but we do have to think the process through. At the same time, we don't wanna talk ourselves out of something that we're really passionate about. We just need to be real. Are we willing to go through that? In your case, you have to be away from home sometime. Do you if your kids were still little, you wouldn't be able to do that. In my case, I have to have a good working home studio. If my husband wasn't an engineer, And I'm not to say people can't do things if they don't have a backup, but they need to have some plan. Like, what happens if my equipment goes down? What happens if this, that, and the you know, all of the things that you need to put in place to see yourself.
Sandy Kovach [00:23:20]:
And I have a lot of people right now, and I wouldn't say a lot, but every so often, how do you get into voice overs? And that's a decent question. And I would never say to somebody, don't go up and ask someone who's been in it. But especially right now in the industry with AI and all of the other things, my first thing I want to blurt out is it's not good right now. But, but it's a complicated question, and there are so many resources on, YouTube. But you do wanna talk to somebody too because there are a lot of scams out there as well. Some people, they really wanna do it, and other people are just thinking, well, I can talk. So let me just get into it. So usually, what I tell people is I'll refer them to some websites that are I know are reputable, and I'll explain a little bit of what I do.
Sandy Kovach [00:24:08]:
And then come back to me, and we'll talk again. And I've had people that I've made voice demos for that really wanted to get into it. And then I've had people that I was you know, I don't really discourage them, but I I guess they discovered themselves. Yeah. So yeah. So there's a process. It's just a funny question. Yeah.
Sandy Kovach [00:24:25]:
I can do that. I can talk. I can play the piano. I can produce, a movie, whatever.
Lanee Blaise [00:24:31]:
You're actually onto something really good too because as you were saying that it really did make me think. We're talking about the balance between faith and action, but there is a balance between, like, being a five year old and and and acting like you're a cynical old person who, like, has just given up. There should be some kind of balance in the middle because I do love the freshness that we had as kids, Most of us when we're like, I'm gonna go do this or I wanna do that. I remember, oh, Sandy, I wanted to be wonder woman. I wanted to have 12 kids. I wanted to be a pediatrician and a dancer. And I really
Sandy Kovach [00:25:07]:
Where did you wanna marry Ralph Macchio? I'm sorry. I have to throw that out.
Lanee Blaise [00:25:11]:
That was older. That was when I got a little older, and I was I was more smoothed out that I was gonna marry Ralph Macchio. There was even Prince who was in there, you know. For a while. It was she's awesome. All these folks that you think, yeah, they'd like me. I'd be great for them. You know, we'd be a great couple.
Lanee Blaise [00:25:28]:
It's thinking big. It's allowing yourself to think outside the box and expand your vision and just think on it. But then there's also the part that we were talking about where once you do think on it a little bit, we really start to hone in on those things that we really, really want and need. I don't really need Ralph Macchio or Prince. I don't really need to be Wonder Woman.
Sandy Kovach [00:25:54]:
Not today.
Lanee Blaise [00:25:55]:
I really don't need no. I really don't need to have 12 kids either. But I began to open up to portions of that, right? Parts of that. So even though I don't, you know, I have two kids and I have and I can write a movie or produce a movie that has Wonder Woman esque heroes in it, and I just think this is really a healthy thing to do to kinda look at the really big wide open anything goes picture and balance it with, you know, sprinkle in some realism, not negativity, but realism. Keep some optimism, and then you start to really open up. Because I just think, Sandy, when you said the part about, I like to talk. I'd like to do voiceovers. It it really is great to talk to someone, and I know my son is going through this right now because he is looking for internships for what areas of business he wants to do.
Lanee Blaise [00:26:59]:
And even though he hasn't snagged one yet, it's so interesting that as we talk to people, I've been talking to my siblings and my even my dad, there's people right within our own family where he can learn. My sister is like, one of my sisters is like, hey What if we had him work for my side company? He can learn all about ten ninety nines, onboarding people, getting the a program set in place for how we do our hiring practices, and then he'll have a whole chunk of HR experience. And I'm like, oh, shoot. This is a win win. You know? And it's because of the openness and the talking about it, which again is still that balance between having faith and listening for God, who you're even gonna mention this to, and having a good dose of works and action as well.
Sandy Kovach [00:27:54]:
Yeah. Indeed. And, it's not always gonna be clear. And God always doesn't, drop something on you immediately. Like, you don't pray and I mean, some people get it. I know, Lanae, you talked about how you've heard from God. Sometimes it takes
Lanee Blaise [00:28:09]:
some time. Has happened. Sometimes it's twenty four hours because I promise you, I had this oh my gosh. Okay. This is a big one where I really prayed about you mentioned the industry sometimes being tough. It seems like all industries are tough right now, but television and film has had some blows lately, like you said, with AI, with money situations, with strikes, and and all kinds of things. But I was praying for the industry and I was praying for the younger generations, for that creative spirit in the industry of TV and film to not be snuffed out. And within twenty four hours, I began receiving LinkedIn requests from young women who were in college or just graduated college interested in the industry and like, kind of like what you were saying, wanted to talk about the journey that I had to see, you know, where they might fit in with it and how their college degree might fit in with it and their experience.
Lanee Blaise [00:29:14]:
And they just kept coming and coming. Now there's gosh, over 24 ladies, over two dozen ladies that are kind of in this quasi community with me where we, you know, we really talk straight talk about the industry and we collaborate and we support each other and build each other up. So I also, as a piece of advice, ask for for God to give you those community opportunities, just like my mom with her actual neighbors, the people who live on her street, gathering together, meeting with one another, and doing beautiful, positive, uplifting words and deeds.
Sandy Kovach [00:29:57]:
Yeah. And if you don't know what to pray, God knows your heart. It Says in the bible, the holy spirit will intercede for you. Say, you know what, lord? I know I wanna go in this direction, but I'm not really sure how or why or who I need to meet. Can you open the doors or nudge my heart? Give me some clarity. Things like that. So, yeah, sometimes it's direct like what Linnea said, specific prayers, specific answers. Sometimes it's very general.
Lanee Blaise [00:30:25]:
Agreed. I think everybody could take a little moment, maybe even this weekend, and just think about some of the things that we said. Take some time imagining and visualizing some of these things from start to finish and then taking that time to be still and quiet, pray to God and believe and listen for and wait for a response and that special way that God might communicate with you, whether it's something that you, you know, you have the actual words come through to your spirit and your brain, or if it's through a song, or if it's through the next person that you speak with and they speak some wisdom into you, we are all connected. We need to act like it. We need to believe it. We're all connected to the source, which is God.
Sandy Kovach [00:31:19]:
And through helping other people, which your prayer to help those young women came true and help them and not just you. And and like you mentioned, big strong point last week, two weeks ago in our podcast. It's not always about me or you or whoever. It's sometimes it's about the bigger picture, what god wants to do through someone else. Sandy Kovach [00:32:23]:
